And I know it's long gone and there was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to
And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to
The sun had begun to slowly peak above the horizon, yet another day had dawned. The streams of sunlight pushed their way into her den through the cracks in the walls though they hadn’t disturbed the she’s slumber. In the night she had laid in her nest simply peaking into the night. While the rest of the clan rested she simply watched. Nothing good ever seemed to come from the night as the darkness had taken form to attack her clan, kill her leader, and wound those who would never forget what she had done. Yet as the dawn appeared the she decided she must rise as well. Between her teeth Frecklefern grabbed a large leaf and pushed her way out of the den. Sitting outside was her own private guard, one who had been placed their for safety purposes; for her own or the clans, who was to say but it didn’t change the fact that this is what she was to live with now. “If ya ain’t wanna go with me or I’ll find someone else but I gotta go git some herbs from the clearing.” The mottled healer started to trot away from her den, not even looking over her shoulder as she did. Had the guard not started following her then someone would have stopped her before she left camp.
As Frecklefern entered the clearing for the first time in nights all of the tension left her shoulders and she felt as if she could finally breathe. A cool breeze brushed through her fur and for a moment she stood there to take it all in. Her heart had stopped pounded for a moment and she didn’t feel like she had look over her shoulder. All of the eyes that constantly tracked her every move were left behind in camp. Though the warrior still stood near her she could push him towards the back of her mind long enough to imagine she was alone. Yet that moment couldn’t last for every and the mottled healer continued to push on.
Continuing on the morning was quiet. Not many were up this early so she’d be able to avoid the prying eyes. Reaching the clearing she turned to the warrior who had accompanied her and gave him a nod. “Ya can stay here. I ain’t gonna leave ya sight but I ain’t need someone followin’ me step for step.” With that, the she stepped away from the top to walk along the border. It was an understanding between the two clans that those responsible for keeping them alive could wander here without fear of retaliation. Along the border mint and lavender grew often filling the area with a distinct scent. As she walked along there was something else intermingled with them, one much more distinct. Her eyes looked along the border in search of the scent and quickly she spotted it. “Well, I ain’t expectin’ to find company out here, but it looks like company found me.” Her chocolate dipped toes carried her in the direction of the tom. It had been nearly a moon since she had seen the tom and as she got closer she could see how that moon had aged him. New scars, new wrinkles, new wounds that still needed to heal.
Guess this moon wasn’t easy on either of us.
